How to Renew Your Health Policy Without Paying a Dime

Before you make a decision on this issue, there are things you have to know and consider. It is true we now have a tough economy and it is difficult for most families to make ends meet making their health insurance to be under probability, not knowing whether to continue with cobra or to stop. Continuing with cobra requires the full payment of the family's health insurance notwithstanding the number involved. With the former employer the health plan was still expensive even with the group rate. Below are some guidelines on how to decide either to continue or not.

Firstly, if there are children in your family, it is wise to continue with COBRA because it is very risky to have a child without coverage. Another situation is whereby you have someone in the family that needs constant medical attention or suffers from any sickness like diabetes or sickle cell anemia that requires constant treatment, and then it is best to continue with COBRA. With COBRA, the bills are expensive but it will help when you want to change your employer. If you don't have an existing provider, getting coverage for that person will be difficult because he will be seen as a patient with an already existing illness or you will be charged at a high rate.

In a situation whereby you have a very healthy family, and all of a sudden a family member needs medical care and your family is not covered medically, it will be difficult to get a doctors attention. If you already have a coverage but it is about to expire, and you don't know if you are to continue or not, do not rush into taking a check up or test before the expiring date because this might affect your getting a new employer when they see you have a pre-existing illness after the test. But if you really need a doctor's care, make sure you avoid implicating tests. While waiting to get a new employer, you could contact the office and request for low rate for office visits or your former employer might be willing to reduce the cost of office visit knowing the economy is really tough on people.
